There's likely a long-term relationship in your life you're better off ending right now. It could be your marriage, but more likely a partner you see or a toxic friend.
How do you know when to end a long-term relationship? When you know it's best to finish it, how do you end a long-term relationship without having the person burn your house down? This article answers these questions.
THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE WHEN ENDING A RELATIONSHIP - AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD
The normal way to determine if you should end a relationship is a pro-con scale. You analyze what's good and bad then weigh the points against each other. This creates the dilemma and confusion of when to terminate a long-term relationship. "No connection is there, but he's so nice to me."
Mira Kirshenbaum, in her book "Too Good to Leave, Too Bad to Stay", describes the "ambivalence" we experience in relationships. There's the good side of a relationship where you're financially looked after or you're not beaten. Then there's the bad side where your needs are ignored, you're emotionally degraded, or you're with an addict. Positives exist but so do negatives causing the pro-con scale to not be of help in your final decision.

If your relationship exhibits certain symptoms - notably something like abuse - it's diseased and you are better off ending it.
ADVICE FOR THE MARRIED READER
Nearly every book and article I discovered on this topic helps you decide if you should end a relationship from a selfish standpoint. The summary is: if you're not happy, end it. A healthy marriage is more complex than that.
Marriages around the world end because men and women are unhappy then unwilling to honor their vows working through the inevitable challenges. One man thought he should end his marriage because he no longer loved his wife. "I just don't love you" is not a sign the relationship should end. Love is a skill. You can learn how to love people to rebuild a relationship.
I believe marriage is another ballpark to the discussion here. What's revealed is not intended to fully apply to marriage. I don't want the signs of an ending relationship revealed to be reason for you to get out when things get tough. That's selfish. The self does not always precede others.
Two become one in marriage - your unhappiness doesn't justify divorce. No marriage exists without the couple changing and working through problems.
10 SIGNS OF AN ENDING RELATIONSHIP
How do you know if your friendship or date is on the brink of finishing? Below are some symptoms of a dying relationship. If you spot several signs of an ending relationship, that alone is not enough reason to terminate it. The signs are just indicators of the current relationship condition:
* You break their boundaries. Respect is absent.
* You're more resentful than usual. This shows up in irritability and fighting over little things.
* You fight less. Whatever happens, happens because you no longer care.
* You jump to harsh conclusions. For example, your partner is late to arrive home from work so the thought of an affair crosses your mind.
* You describe the person to someone in unflattering words. Similarly, if someone else belittles the person, you agree and feel satisfied.
* You find yourself spending less and less time together.
* You have chronic boredom. This means you do little together, aren't having fun, and don't enjoy each other's company.
* Promises aren't kept.
* The two of you remain at emotional opposite ends. This signals no rapport, a disconnect, and a lack of love. The relationship is weak when it doesn't bother you the person is hurting.
* You're concerned you'll find signs here that apply to your relationship.
If you saw one or two signs in your relationship, don't freak out, call the person up, and say it's over in a crying mess. Let the signs be red flags for you to address. We all make relationship mistakes that can be solved.
What's not a sign of an ending relationship is fighting. Conflict is healthy to have so it's important you resolve conflict when others avoid it.
7 QUESTIONS FOR WHEN TO END A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP
For our diagnosis, ask yourself the following seven questions. These are filters that indicate you should end the relationship:
* "Has there been multiple occasions of physical violence in the relationship?" All violence is inexcusable. If you answered yes, get support, be safe, and leave. You deserve better than abuse.
* "Does the person have a behavior like an addiction that makes the relationship difficult to be in and they're unwilling to change?" Most people are addicted to something. The questions to consider are: What? How destructive is it? And are they seeking help?
* "Were times ever good together?" The relationship may have been doomed from the start. The question gives you a higher perspective that current problems can be worked through. People change so don't forever clasp the past trying to recreate it.
* "Do you want to bring up important issues?" It's good if you actually do it, but a desire to address an important issue is enough indication you care for the relationship.
* "Have you chosen a goal like a career move that must exclude the person?" There's no reason to keep a relationship going when you've already decided the person being in your life is not viable. Be honest to yourself and them.
* "Aside from positive traits and current problems, do you and the person like each other?" Not an easy question to answer because it's difficult to see through resentment.
* "If I told you it's okay to leave, would you feel responsible for your decision, say yes, and be relieved?"
A less important relationship may not be worth fixing.
Having gone through the seven questions, do you think you should end the relationship? You may want to not cut the relationship and instead correct the problem pulling you two apart. If the person behaves destructively, consider expressing what you expect from the person. If your career has you travel around the world, describe the scenario then let the person decide if he or she wants to be part of it.
A less important relationship may not be worth fixing. These are relationships easy to create with new people and ones you care little about. It is natural and common to end invaluable relationships. You have dying relationships where the investment of time and emotional energy to revive the relationship is better spent elsewhere.
HOW TO END A LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP IN 8 SIMPLE STEPS
Leslie Baxter from the University of Iowa in her "Strategies for Ending Relationships: Two Studies" paper analyzed how people end relationships. The communication researcher found that how you end a relationship depends on relationship closeness and your perception of what caused the relationship to rot. Dating for one week and got cheated on? You may dump via an angry text and leave it at.
10 Ways We End Relationships
Here are 10 ways we end relationships based on the research of Leslie Baxter:
* Evasion. Dumping your new date 101.
* Direct dump. "It's over. Bye."
* Justification. "Here's why it's bad"
* Betterment. "Here's why we'll benefit from splitting"
* Dating someone else.
* Gossip. "I don't like how he"
* Threats.
* Blame. "I'm not the problem, you are."
* Mutual decision.
* Time. Natural decay.
If you want a plan to end a relationship because you don't know how, I'll give you a simple eight-step process. Most difficulty in ending a relationship comes from you not wanting to hurt the person. Here you take responsibility for their feelings - a toxic trait. Release yourself from controlling other's emotions and instead focus on being responsible for yours.
You can choose from the indirect and direct options. The indirect option is letting nature pull you apart. You stop doing nice things, you skip deep conversation, and time causes you to split. The direct option of splitting up face-to-face is more difficult. Use this process:
* Think through what the person will say. This isn't to make you a rigid robot, but aims to put your best foot forward.
* Share a quiet place between the two of you.
* Begin by saying, "This isn't easy for me to bring up because I know it'll hurt you, but I need to do it."
* State your reasons without rambling. If the person wants more detail, they'll ask for it. When you clearly give reason to why you're ending the relationship, you help the two of you move on. Not understanding the justification for splitting up is the number one reason someone fails to get over a relationship break up.
* Be specific where possible. Say, "The other day when you" instead of "You don't care for me anymore."
* Expect and accept strong feelings from the person. He or she will feel rejected and likely deal with the emotion by making you feel guilt. Don't let their game alter your stance.
* Avoid reassurance ("Things will work out for you"). It is a frustrating communication barrier to hear and an attempt to stop the person from feeling hurt. Nothing you say will change their hurt.
* Learn some techniques of how to say no so you stand your ground.
Stop driving yourself crazy. You know the signs of when to end a long-term relationship and how to do it so get off the fence and pick a side. If you choose to leave, you'll look back in 1 year and be happy you made the decision.
If times are tough and you decide to try make the relationship work, keep learning and developing your relationship skills and eliminating the 12 communication barriers. Relationships are hard. That's why they're so satisfying.

We tend to be very believing of our "reality" maps, if we understand Milton Erickson's intent and what he was trying to achieve with the statement 'map is not the territory,' my guess would be that it was a useful disconnection with problem thinking. Map: these words you are now reading are 'black', these words are not "black" well not really, black is just the name of the experience of the light contrast. The naming is a useful deception we speakers of English lend to each other as if we all know what each other is thinking. SAPIR WHORF HYPOTHESIS "Human beings do not live in the objective world alone, nor alone in the world of social activity as ordinarily understood, but are very much at the mercy of the particular language which has become the medium of expression for their society. It is quite an illusion to imagine that one adjusts to reality essentially without the use of language and that language is merely an incidental means of solving specific problems of communication and reflection. The fact of the matter is that the 'real world' is to a large extent unconsciously built up on the language habits of the group." IDENTIFYING In General Semantics Korzybski says "be careful of those small words of identity" 'is' and 'are' and 'am'. Nothing could be further from the truth than the idea 'that we are an accountant, dad, teacher or even inspiration.' Up until now NLP has sided with the idea that it is dangerous to identify with some of our ideas like "I am depressed", "I'm an anxious person", "I have low esteem" etc Meaning making is so much apart of our entire neurological make up and experience we simply, without questioning much, all continue linking our meanings/maps to these stimuli-experiences which tends to equal "our realities". We couldn't really believe anything that has not come in through our 5 senses anyway right? True: map is not the territory (music is not the score menu is not the meal) but we tend to make is so, this outside-in approach is only a dirty mechanism on the real truth. It is not that we tend to life and living from the outside world in but that we tend to create more from within (a world) for the outer. "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." Ralph Waldo Emerson" MODELING SUCCESS As I began modeling excellence, my approach is in opposition to the NLP belief "map is not the territory". What if we forgot to distinguish between map and territory but in a useful way. Map is not the territory seemed exempted, when people are accelerating thier success. Each of them identified with (glued up their map to a quite significant territory). NLP is built around what works. Former church staffers say talks concerned work with Sea Org.
FBI agents investigating human trafficking have interviewed several high-ranking defectors from the Church of Scientology who spoke out to the St. Petersburg Times over the past two years about abusive and coercive practices within the church.
Five former church staffers confirmed Monday that the FBI interviewed them individually over the past 15 months about their experiences in the church's religious order, the Sea Org.
They said agents asked detailed questions primarily about working and living conditions at Scientology's remote international management base in the desert east of Los Angeles. The defectors - Amy Scobee, Mike Rinder, Tom DeVocht, Jeff Hawkins and Gary Morehead - said they described to agents how Sea Org staffers were restricted to the compound, intimidated, degraded and coerced to work long hours for little pay.
The defectors' account of life inside Scientology first appeared in the Times in a 2009 investigative series titled The Truth Rundown.
The church has emphatically denied that any staffers were mistreated and says the defectors were lying when they claimed that church leader David Miscavige physically attacked managers whose work performance displeased him.
News of an FBI investigation broke early Monday on the website of the New Yorker magazine. Investigative journalist Lawrence Wright presents in the current issue a lengthy profile of former Scientology parishioner Paul Haggis, an Academy Award winning screenwriter and film director who left the church in 2009, citing a range of concerns, among them the revelations reported in the Truth Rundown.
Wright reported that former Scientology executive Scobee, former international base security chief Morehead and DeVocht, a former church manager in Clearwater, all were interviewed by the FBI as part of a human trafficking investigation he characterized as ongoing.
On Monday, Scientology spokesman Tommy Davis said that the New Yorker article was "nothing but a rehash of unfounded allegations" and that the church "has never been advised of any government investigation."
Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles, said she could neither confirm nor deny the existence of the investigation.
On Monday, Scobee, Rinder and DeVocht told the Times that Los Angeles-based Special Agent Tricia Whitehill traveled to Clearwater to interview them at the FBI's office on Cleveland Street.
Scobee said Whitehill interviewed her for two days, Dec. 3 and 4, 2009. She said the agent asked about several topics, including instances of physical violence Scobee witnessed and punishments like the Rehabilitation Project Force or "RPF," a labor detail in which Sea Org members who transgress can work their way back into the church's good graces.
Scobee described RPFs as camps where staffers can languish for years, separated from friends, spouses and other family and given low quality food and living quarters.
She said she first came in contact with the FBI after she sent the agency copies of affidavits and other documents the church had given the Times and ABC News Nightline in 2009. The church offered the materials as proof Miscavige never hit anyone. But the documents - including sworn statements by current Scientology executives - acknowledged that violence occurred within the church's top management.
"They are admitting under penalty of perjury that it's happening with wild abandon," Scobee said. "None of them are calling the police. It needs intervention because they somehow think it's okay."
Shortly after Scobee sent the documents to the FBI, the agency called her, said it had an ongoing investigation into Scientology and arranged to meet with her, she said.
While in the Clearwater FBI office for her interview, Scobee said, Whitehill cautioned her not to speak with other employees in the office. She said Whitehill indicated the office might be compromised when it came to Scientology.
She said Whitehill also interviewed her husband, Mat Pesch, a longtime church staffer in Clearwater who defected with her in 2005.
Scobee said she gave the FBI a long list of contact information for people who had left the international base and was impressed that the agency had already interviewed some of them.
Asked why she decided to talk about the investigation now, despite the FBI's request that she remain quiet, Scobee said: "I didn't hear anything for a year and I got fed up. They're either going to do something or they're not."
Rinder, the former church spokesman, said he met with Whitehill in Clearwater for five hours. He detailed restrictions placed in 2006 on about 75 church managers who, Rinder said, were prevented from leaving their office complex, a pair of conjoined double-wide trailers that the managers gave the derisive nickname "the Hole.'
For months, Rinder and his colleagues slept on the floor, working well into the night, getting to leave only to shower once a day, Rinder said.
He said Whitehill's questions focused on work practices that can constitute human trafficking under the law. He said he related that Sea Org members assigned to the international base did not have easy access to telephones, that their passports were confiscated and that they were not free to leave the base, which is guarded and bordered by a chain-link fence topped with razor wire.
Rinder said the agent asked whether he believed staffers had been coerced into thinking they would be harmed if they tried to leave. His answer: "Yeah, of course.'
Rinder headed the church's Office of Special Affairs for two decades before running away in March 2007 while on assignment in London. He lived in Denver, working as a car salesman, before moving to Pinellas in late 2009. He now does consulting work and public relations.
Toward the end of 2010, he said he had the sense the FBI's investigation had lost momentum or, perhaps, had been shelved. But he added that Whitehill told him more than once, "Oh, we're still going.'
DeVocht is one of the few church managers to successfully flee the international base. Fed up with what he described as humiliating and degrading treatment of himself and others, he jumped over the front gate in 2005 and walked the 6 miles to nearby Hemet, Calif., eventually making his way to Florida, where his family lived before he joined the Sea Org at 14.
Now living in Oldsmar and selling furniture, DeVocht supervised church facilities in Clearwater before being assigned to the California base in the early 2000s. His interview with Whitehill ran about 90 minutes, he said. The agent posed specific, informed questions.
"Obviously, she had a ton of information,' DeVocht said. "A lot of what I said confirmed what she had already heard.'
Like Rinder, he said he described conditions inside "the Hole' as well as the wire-topped perimeter fence and patrolling guards. He said Whitehill asked: Were the barriers and guards to keep the staff in or to prevent outsiders from getting in?
"To keep them in,' he said.
Jeff Hawkins, a former international base staffer who worked on major marketing campaigns, said Whitehill and another agent, Valerie Venegas, interviewed him early last year at the FBI's office in downtown Portland, Ore. "It was pretty much a full day," he said, remembering that he recounted episodes of physical violence by Miscavige and life in the RPF, among other topics. The agents sounded "very knowledgeable" about conditions in the church, Hawkins said.
Morehead, the former security chief, also met with the agents in Portland. He said they asked about a drill he helped devise to retrieve staffers who had "blown" - left without permission. They also asked about female staffers who he said had been pressured to get abortions.
Under federal and state statutes, human trafficking doesn't necessarily involve people being held by physical force. Traffickers can use emotional buttons, intimidation and financial ties to control people.
The FBI's website says there are many signs of human trafficking, but some include:
o Physical, emotional and verbal abuse, or submissiveness.
o A person's food being controlled by someone else.
o A person not speaking on his or her own behalf.
o Lack of control over one's schedule, money, identification and travel documents.
o People living and working in the same place.
o A debt owed to an employer/crew leader, or a perceived inability to leave a job.
The church won a major victory against two human trafficking claims last August when a federal judge in Los Angeles threw out two lawsuits filed against the church by former Sea Org members Claire and Marc Headley, a married couple living in Burbank.
The Headleys, now in their mid 30s, had joined the Sea Org as teenagers. Both were assigned to the desert base, where they met and married, as is common among the hundreds of staffers working there. They escaped separately in early 2005 and were pursued by church security teams, but outmaneuvered them.
The Headleys filed separate suits in January, 2009, alleging they were victims of forced labor. Claire Headley's suit also alleged she had two abortions under pressure from the church, lest she lose her standing in the Sea Org, which discourages members from having children. The church denied pressuring her and said the abortions were Headley's decision.
In dismissing their suits, a judge ruled that the Headleys performed religious duties and that the Sea Org, as a religious order, falls within the "ministerial exception' commonly granted to religious groups in employment cases. The exception prevents the court from digging into internal church workings to explore the Headleys' claims, the judge said.

LONDON, 5TH FEBRUARY 2015: As new research from match.com reveals a quarter (24 per cent) of Brits downplay their true personalities on a first date in a bid to appear 'perfect', Irish model and singer Nadia Forde has teamed up with match.com to encourage people to love themselves and their own imperfections, while also revealing all about her search for an 'Imperfect Gentleman'.
The star, well-known for her recent stint on "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here", openly admits she has her own imperfections - such as being impatient and a bit of a chatterbox - and is looking for a man who will embrace her flaws. But it's not just men that need to accept her: she also has a specific list of imperfections she's looking for in a potential partner, in particular someone who knows their own mind, is headstrong, and even a little stubborn.
Despite many wanting to play down their flaws, 85 per cent of singles say they'd find their date more attractive if they didn't put on a 'perfect' front and instead were comfortable with their own imperfections, and an overwhelming 94 per cent of singles believe imperfections are charming. According to the research, the most common imperfections are:
