What Is Toxic Shame

What Is Toxic Shame
When shame becomes toxic, it can ruin our lives. Everyone experiences shame at one time another. It's an emotion with physical symptoms like any other that come and go, but when it's severe, it can be extremely painful.

Strong feelings of shame stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, causing a fight/flight/freeze reaction. We feel exposed and want to hide or react with rage, while feeling profoundly alienated from others and good parts of ourselves. We may not be able to think or talk clearly and be consumed with self-loathing, which is made worse because we're unable to be rid of ourselves.

We all have our own specific triggers or tender points that produce feelings of shame. The intensity of our experience varies, too, depending upon our prior life experiences, cultural beliefs, personality, and the activating event.

Unlike ordinary shame, "internalized shame" hangs around and alters our self-image. It's shame that has become "toxic," a term first coined by Sylvan Tomkins in the early 1960s in his scholarly examination of human affect. For some people, toxic shame can monopolize their personality, while for others, it lies beneath their conscious awareness, but can easily be triggered.

CHARACTERISTICS OF TOXIC SHAME

Toxic shame differs from ordinary shame, which passes in a day or a few hours, in the following respects:

* It can hide in our unconscious, so that we're unaware that we have shame.

* When we experience shame, it lasts much longer.

* The feelings and pain associated with shame are of greater intensity.

* An external event isn't required to trigger it. Our own thoughts can bring on feelings of shame.

* It leads to shame spirals that cause depression and feelings of hopelessness and despair.

* It causes chronic "shame anxiety" -- the fear of experiencing shame.

* It's accompanied by voices, images, or beliefs originating in childhood and is associated with a negative "shame story" about ourselves.

* We needn't recall the original source of the immediate shame, which usually originated in childhood or a prior trauma.

* It creates deep feelings of inadequacy.

SHAME-BASED BELIEFS

The fundamental belief underlying shame is that "I'm unlovable -- not worthy of connection." Usually, internalized shame manifests as one of the following beliefs or a variation ther:

* I'm stupid.

* I'm unattractive (especially to a romantic partner).

* I'm a failure.

* I'm a bad person.

* I'm a fraud or a phony.

* I'm selfish.

* I'm not enough (this belief can be applied to numerous areas).

* I hate myself.

* I don't matter.

* I'm defective or inadequate.

* I shouldn't have been born.

* I'm unlovable.

THE CAUSE OF TOXIC SHAME

In most cases, shame becomes internalized or toxic from chronic or intense experiences of shame in childhood. Parents can unintentionally transfer their shame to their children through verbal messages or nonverbal behavior. For an example, a child might feel unloved in reaction to a parent's depression, indifference, absence, or irritability or feel inadequate due to a parent's competitiveness or over-correcting behavior. Children need to feel uniquely loved by both parents. When that connection is breached, such as when a child is scolded harshly, children feel alone and ashamed, unless the parent-child bond of love is soon repaired. However, even if shame has been internalized, it can be surmounted by later positive experiences.

If not healed, toxic shame can lead to aggression, depression, eating disorders, PTSD, and addiction. It generates low self-esteem, anxiety, irrational guilt, perfectionism, and codependency, and it limits our ability to enjoy satisfying relationships and professional success.

We can heal from toxic shame and build our self-esteem. To learn more about how to do so and the eight steps to heal, read "Conquering Shame and Codependency: 8 Steps to Freeing the True You".

Anxiety Panic Attack Treatment Tips For Improving Teenage Self Esteem

Anxiety Panic Attack Treatment Tips For Improving Teenage Self Esteem
Panic attacks are anxiety disorders that are very inconvenient to have. A majority of people who have this kind of issue look for anxiety panic attack treatment once they discover that they suffer from the disorder. These disorders differ in such a way that the behavior of the person suffering from a particular panic disorder is not the same as the behavior of a person suffering from another kind of anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders like panic attacks can affect the behavior of a person resulting in him or her to behave in an unreasonable way and have unreasonable fears or phobias.

Anxiety disorder can develop no matter what the gender or age of a person is. It can be common in adults but there are also cases wherein children are affected. With this condition, a child may experience negative thoughts which may never occur in real. In severe situations, a child can feel that he or she is going to die. These feelings can eventually develop into phobia.

Agoraphobia, which is the fear of public places is the most common type of phobia related to panic attacks. A child who has been through an attack in public will worry that it might happen again and as a result chooses to stay inside the house or somewhere that makes him or her feel safe and secure. One of the reasons for choosing to act this way is to prevent humiliation in front of others in case an attack happens again. An anxiety panic attack treatment is usually administered to assist the child suffering from this problem.

In order to cure panic attacks especially in children, the root of the problem has to be determined. One of the common root of these attacks is fear. This can be treated by making a child feel safe and that he or she is not going to be harmed. The child should be taught to stay away from negative thoughts about when the next attack is going to happen. This is due to the fact that the more they think about it, the higher chances that it is going to occur.

There are also studies that claim that people who have less confidence in themselves are more likely to develop these attacks. As mentioned, the attacks can cause a child to feel humiliated especially if the attack occurred in public. If they have less confidence, they do not believe that they can handle and fight another attack so they tend to shy away from most people. Parents and other older people should support them and make them feel safe and secure in order to prevent them from thinking negatively about themselves and their condition.

In order to help the patient eliminate panic attacks and cope with the adverse effects that the attacks brought into his or her life, an anxiety panic attack treatment is often given by psychologists. A child can regain self-confidence and eliminate these attacks with the love and support of people around him or her.

Are you in search of an anxiety panic attack treatment that works fast using natural remedies? Eliminate anxiety and panic attacks in order to live the normal life you deserve.

Someone Can Help You

Someone Can Help You
When social anxiety disorder begins to take control of a situation, you feel surrounded on all sides with no hope of stopping the assault of fear. People who just go through "stage fright" or shyness have a tiny glimpse into the horror you go through when your social anxiety is so strong that it can paralyze you from being able to perform even the most basic of social functions. The combined trauma of feeling anxiety turn you into a nonfunctional human being combined with the terrible embarrassment and social isolation you feel when people in your social circle witness an anxiety attack makes episodes of social anxiety disorder a genuine hell on earth experience.

The first thing to realize if you have such severe anxiety symptoms that you cannot perform in some social situations is that you really do have a disorder. Too often people who suffer with social anxiety disorder blame themselves and allow the shame and embarrassment to only make the sense of guilt and isolation much, much worse. Everyone has some social anxiety. But if your difficulty with social situations such as speaking in public, going on a date or attending a job interview literally stop you from being a success and keep you away from important social engagements, its time to seek help.

By recognizing that you have a genuine disorder, you take the first step of acknowledging that your problem is not your fault. Medical science has acknowledged that social anxiety disorder is a genuine psychological illness. You don't blame yourself or undergo guilt if you get the flu or break your big toe. So there is no reason to beat yourself up or experience any blame because you are suffering with a medically recognized disorder. It just means you need and deserve to find help.

The second and very important thing to recognize when social anxiety disorder disrupts your life so severely is that there are people that can help you and that these people WANT to help you. Social anxiety disorder lies to its victims and makes them feel isolated and unworthy of friendship or help. Don't let this insidious disease deceive you. There are people in your life that love you and want you to see this disease treated and even cured. And yes, you CAN be cured of social anxiety disorder.

Just by recognizing that you are experiencing social anxiety that is far more severe than what everybody else goes through is a clue that you have a medical problem that can be treated medically. In fact, social anxiety disorder is the second most common psychological disease in the country. That means that highly trained and qualified doctors know what to do to help you. Sadly, many people who suffer with social anxiety problems don't seek out help from doctors because to do so is a social connection and the very anxiety that doctors want to help you with can disable you from seeking that help. Its a tragic dilemma.

So tap into the most powerful social force you have at your disposal. That is your close circle of loved ones, family and friends. Start by being willing to talk about what you are going through. There is no shame in being sick. Don't give in to the instinct to hide your anxieties and wish they would just go away. To beat this disorder, it must be confronted. And if you are not capable of contacting a psychologist or seeking that help, allow the ones that love you most to get that help for you.

Along with medical help and the value of loved ones who are your first line of defense against this ugly problem, the internet can be a lifeline for you in helping you battle social anxiety disorder. Just as you found this article, there are mountains of information out there in cyberspace to help you understand the disorder you are suffering with and arm you with plenty of advice and information so you can fight back and win against social anxiety disorder.

Take advantage of every resource you have to reduce the debilitating impacts of this paralyzing disorder. Anything you can do to reach out to people, doctors and internet groups that can help you is a step in the right direction. Once you are on the road to recovery, you will be so glad you say "NO" to social anxiety disorder and the damage it can do to your life.

Can You Will Yourself Happier

Can You Will Yourself Happier
"Happiness is as a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you"." (Nathaniel Hawthorne)A key question for people hoping to improve their well-being is whether it is counter-productive to focus too hard on the end goal of being happier. Philosophers like John Stuart Mill have proposed that it is - he wrote that happiness comes to those who "have their minds fixed on some object other than their own happiness." A pertinent study published in 2003 by Jonathan Schooler and his colleagues (pdf) supported this idea: participants who listened to music with the intention of feeling happier actually ended up feeling less happy than others who merely listened to the music with no happiness goal.

But now a new study has come along which purports to show that trying deliberately to be happier is beneficial after all. Yuna Ferguson and Kennon Sheldon criticise the Schooler study on the basis that the music used - Stravinsky's Rite of Spring - is not conducive to happiness, and that's why it interfered with deliberate attempts to feel happier.

Ferguson and Sheldon had 167 participants spend 12 minutes listening either to Rite of Spring or an upbeat section from Rodeo by Copland. Crucially, half the participants were instructed to relax and observe their natural reactions to the music. "It is important that you do not try to consciously improve your mood," they were told. The other participants received the opposite instructions - "really focus on improving your mood".

Afterwards, two measures of mood were taken - one based on six words like "joyful"; the other a continuous measure of positive feelings. The participants who'd listened to the cheery music, "and" simultaneously tried to improve their mood, reported feeling in a more positive mood than the participants who'd merely listened to the upbeat music, and the participants who'd listened to the down-beat music, whether they strived to feel happier or not. This was despite the fact that the groups did not differ in how much they'd enjoyed the activity, or how "pressured" they'd felt to complete it.

A second study was similar, but this time 68 participants visited a psych lab five times over two weeks to spend 15 minutes each time listening to music they'd chosen from a pre-selected list covering various genres from folk to hip-hop. Again, half the participants were instructed to focus on the music and not their own happiness (they were told that doing so could backfire); the other half were told to think a lot about their happiness and to try to feel happier (they were told that doing so is beneficial).

At the end of the two weeks, the group who'd deliberately tried to feel happier showed an improvement in their happiness levels compared with baseline; in contrast, the participants who'd merely focused on the music did not enjoy this benefit. This was despite both groups believing to the same degree that the intervention would make them happier, and both groups enjoying their music the same amount.

"The results suggest that without trying, individuals may not experience higher positive changes in their well-being," Ferguson and Sheldon concluded. "Thus practitioners and individuals interested in happiness interventions might consider the motivational mindset as an important facet of improving well-being."

"Sceptical readers may not be so easily persuaded. Because there was no attempt to measure the participants' thought-processes, it's difficult to know how they interpreted and acted on the two forms of instruction. In the second study in particular, even though they were told there was no need, how do we know the participants didn't go to lengths outside of the lab to boost their happiness? From a statistical point of view, the first study lacks any measure of change" in mood.

The second study is also complicated by the music-focus group starting out with, and ending up with, a slightly higher average happiness score than the happiness-focus group (albeit these differences were not statistically significant) - see graph. This raises the possibility of a ceiling effect for the music-focus group - perhaps they were already too happy for the intervention to make a difference.

A Utilitarian View Of Justice Part 3

A Utilitarian View Of Justice Part 3

From the reader again:

I wonder if empathy is a refuge for people who don't believe in god but find utilitarianism too cold as a basis for morality. Or maybe people who have an excess of empathy find it abhorrent to be utilitarian, because it's somehow dehumanizing (ie, being utilitarian means you make an impersonal calculation about the greatest good for the greatest number, as opposed to treating everyone like as individuals)?

I'll share a story with you, which you're also welcome to publish on your blog: I was flying home from Africa a few years ago, and was seated beside a Moroccan woman and her son, on their way to visit family in Montreal. At one point, she asked me about my religion. I told her that I didn't believe in god, which immediately distressed her. I recall her almost frantically reassuring me that I was probably a good person anyway, and that I looked like I loved my family, and so on. I think she was, in her own way, trying to be nice to me and not make me feel bad about my atheism!

Her apprehension of me makes sense, I think. Her morality derives from God. She doesn't kill, steal, or eat pork because Allah forbids it. Then she meets me, and not only don't I believe in Allah, I don't believe in any god at all. If I don't believe in god, then what stops me from killing and stealing? In her eyes, nothing! And yet I don't look like a monster. How is that possible? What prevents people from being monsters if not god? I think some empaths feel the same way about sociopaths and empathy.

I'm guessing that some empaths think about someone like you, who doesn't experience any emotional empathy, and freak out like the woman beside me on the plane did. Their morality is based on empathy/god. You have no empathy/don't believe in god. Therefore you have no morality. You now become completely unpredictable to them, hence the fear. You eat pork and don't pray, so maybe you also murder? You don't cry when others are in pain, so maybe you can kill someone and not feel badly about it?

This last part of the story reminds me a lot of this.
