The Challenge Team

The Challenge Team
Local action as appropriate. The Challenge Team is a response to the anti-Catholic sex education that is nearly always found in Catholic schools, let alone non-Catholic ones. They discuss relationships, the importance of committment, and the value of chastity. This is not ideal: it embeds the notion of whole-class (not one-to-one) discussions on highly personal matters, and also the taking over of this aspect of education from parents. However, it is the only way for an orthodox organisation to reach children in schools and in the context of the actual situation in most schools they can do a lot of good. They are a resource Catholic parents should know about and get into their schools.

From CFNews: Sue Relf of the Challenge Team emails this report : 'Challenge Team has had another astonishing year. Two terms of touring have taken place - seven weeks in October and November and eight weeks from January to March. Ashburnham Place in Sussex hosts us for our training and preparation week. Twice we arrived at Ashburnham - in September and in January ten days or so before the first school was booked - with girls ready to tour this time, but no boys signed up. Both times we prayed (we had been praying and scouring the country for months) and both times young men joined the teams in time. The young adult team members were exceptional once again. Clare Horberry and Becca Sullivan (both 18) were joined in the autumn by Andrew Palmer (18) and Paul Thomas (23) and in January by Martin Yates (29). (This team was only three in number, but produced a very good presentation.)

They visited Manchester, Liverpool and area, the Isle of Man, Scotland, Bristol, Bath and area in the autumn term and East and West Sussex, Hants and the Isle of Wight, Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham, Ipswich, St Neots (Cambs), Stafford, Oxon, Hereford, Glos, Cheddar and finally Croydon and London, in the spring term.

In all they visited 90 schools and 7 youth groups, making a total of 142 presentations to over 17,500 teenagers. Of the schools, 33 schools were visited for the first time and the remaining 57 were return visits. 98% of the schools that fed back have asked for a visit either next year or the year after. Nearly 30 kind and hospitable families gave hospitality as the team travelled from place to place. The number of pupils in schools up and down the UK that have now witnessed a presentation since the beginning of 2004 has now reached 60,500. Twenty seven volunteer team members have been recruited. Local organisers have been a key factor in the opening up of new schools in new areas and in organising local hospitality.

We are now getting used to brilliant feedback. One pupil wrote in an email: 'I recently had an assembly by the 'Challenge Team' at my school and I really found it inspirational. I really respect you people for doing what you are doing, how you respect your virginity and seem to cherish it. As a teenager currently in a world where it is the single goal to 'get laid' as it is commonly said. For a while I too was among the crowd of people who sought solely after the prospect of sex, until I heard what you had to say. It really changed my view on sex, virginity, marriage and even girls! I really thank you for this, and as much as I doubt that it will be possible for me to keep my virginity until my day of marriage mainly because of the sheer colossal amount of pressure on me to lose it, I do hope that I can follow in your footsteps as much as teen-agely possible.'

Others emailed: 'You did a presentation in my school just the other day which was very informative and made me think a lot.'

'I watched your presentation at school. It seemed to make sense.'

'I think everyone should learn about these things.'

Teachers said: 'We felt it was good to explain to the students that there is an alternative lifestyle choice; students found it 'funny' and 'enjoyable'.

'Very worthwhile presentation. All students were engaged. The presenters held an excellent rapport with the group and involved many without embarrassing anyone.'

'As usual a well presented and challenging hour full of energy. We look forward to next year.'

'Very impressed. Put over an unpopular message in an engaging and thought provoking way. It made a lot of the students think and ask questions.'

We had an added problem this year as none of the presenters were drivers. However, we managed to recruit 12 individuals at different times who passed the team around! We purchased a vehicle, a Ford Galaxy, in January 07. This has been a great success.

A donation from a Trust of lb25,000 per year has enabled Challenge Team to employ two part time administrators, one based in Manchester and one in Eastbourne. Tracy and Shirley organise the tours. Debs Fidler has been employed as Team Leader since September 06. She has made a great difference to the quality of the presentation as she travels with the team in the early stages and coaches them and encourages them en route.

The tours in the autumn term 08 and spring 09 have been plotted. The dates are as follows:

29th Sept to 24th October (4 weeks) - Manchester and the north west

3rd November - Isle of Man

10th November - Scotland

17th November - Bath and Bristol, Torquay

24th November - Shaftesbury and Dorset

19th January - East and West Sussex

26th January - Isle of Wight, Hants

2nd February - Oxford, Brimingham, Worcs, Hereford, Staffs

9th February - Notts

23rd February - Leics

2nd March - Ipswich, Cambs

9th March - Kent, London and Croydon

16th March - London and Croydon

The numbers of schools requesting bookings has grown steadily, so that we are reaching one team's capacity. From September 09 we are planning for enough growth to have a northern team and a southern team, both touring simultaneously for two terms.

Our next task is to recruit new team members for September. Two young women (aged 18 and 19) have signed up. We are seeking male young volunteers for the adventure of a lifetime! The travelling and touring makes Challenge Team a tough assignment, but every volunteer has said what a life changing experience it has been for them and how worthwhile they have found it.

Information about the gap year opportunity is on our website and can be printed off. www.challengeteamuk.org. Challenge Team is also seeking new local organisers who are able to approach schools in their areas and help with accommodation while the team is in the district. Brochures are available from the office: info@challengeteamuk.org. The next round of invitations to schools to make advance bookings are already going out.

It is amazing what a small bunch of 'little' people can do with limited resources when they put their minds to it. Challenge Team has been a real team effort. So many people give their time and resources - a huge debt of thanks is owed.

Exciting times are ahead!

Advocate For Women Rights Inspired By High School Activism

Advocate For Women Rights Inspired By High School Activism
From 1998-2002, I attended The Flare Ivory tower, a very new high educate in Manhattan, which inevitable students to do hours of community service as part of a initiation acclimatize. My first placement had me in a windowless room inside envelopes for an group. Once my first day, I truly went to my advisor and claimed, "I will go crazy if you make me do this." Experienced my love of media -- or perhaps having an salary in maintaining my mental stability -- he reassigned me to Generally Feel sorry for yourself.

I was positioned in "Minor Stroke," the Generally Feel sorry for yourself radio program lay aside WBAI. It was on the whole youth provoked -- formed and hosted by us, for us. The live, bulletin show was intended to chain on medicinal issues, but the planning incessantly shifted to what we felt were better germane at the time.

Our time hidey-hole was Fridays at 1:00p.m. It was the denote of the afternoon and no matter what our intentions to attract a youth deactivate, no youth were listening having the status of they were all at educate. It came as no demoralize that we smoothly took calls from people who weren't particularly zealous on the idea of young people having opinions.

It was a splash to get adults to understand that you can hold a conversation and bicker without being confrontational. This became a learning experience, forcing us to expeditious ourselves in a way that showed people we knew what we were talking about. Our training at Generally Feel sorry for yourself (GK) emphasized critical thinking which helped us understand the complexities and nuances of a law or social issue.

Chock-a-block sex education had been an issue that was absolutely fateful to us at "Minor Stroke." Our consequence on sex ed was the first one someplace we absolutely took the reigns and brought on a sexologist as our discrete guest. We weren't questioning in just discussing putting on a condom and not getting a growth, we at home to investigate what your body goes lay aside and what the real questions youth hold about sex like, like are you absolutely synchronize or how do you be grateful for you've had an orgasm?

Our guest asked us to define virginity and my co-hosts all situate it was any form of good judgment. I humorless to challenge them by asking would they gamble it fluff your virginity if qualities were to masturbate with a dildo or any supplementary idea. It was a question we continued to inform on air, nevertheless I got masses a look daggers from my father like I got home that day. At 16, I was brave enough to ask the questions that I knew extra to a far away outsized and obligatory meeting. It was lay aside the training that we did at Generally Feel sorry for yourself that I was able to feel brusque and gratify in in my opinion enough to be grateful for that I possibly will bother the issue without it being seen as moist.

Once graduating from high educate, I inside at Generally Feel sorry for yourself for the money up front appearance. Next, I inside for GK's Online Command Adjust to start up a college prep program for a local high educate. Once a few go business outdated, I was hired at Generally Feel sorry for yourself as a Adjust Aide. My answer chain was on GK's almanac youth meeting. Stuff came full circle like again my love of media led me to become Online Command Adjust Link up someplace I helped to pierce the Generally Feel sorry for yourself responsibility with our digital media programs.

My passion for sex education and women's issues still remained with me, which is why I mobilized our Generally Feel sorry for yourself youth to work with V-Day, the movement to end violence against women, for their One Billion Increasing argue. Keep on see, I related the V-Day appearance someplace I chain on management V-Girls, the youth organization of the movement.

In just the standpoint month we hold heard stories of over 200 girls being abducted and possibly trafficked for trying to get an education; a high educate girl being stabbed and killed for rejecting a boy's prom invitation; and just this weekend, six people were murdered having the status of of a young man who at home to strict retribution on women for not having sex with him. These consecutive incidents point to outsized conversations that need to be had in our majestic about masculinity, misogyny, and how we are raising our boys. V-Girls soup?on the delicacy of violence we are in and hold been business towards making their own communities safer places.

In South Africa, our V-Girls hold been leading empowerment workshops in their schools and communities. They hold also initiated a successful leader cloth argue in companionship with the young women of Nigeria. In New York, V-Girls are separation to be business all summer on ways to send these conversations to their schools by looking at what is attainment to the power of language in rape delicacy. If I hold teacher anything from having been a Generally Feel sorry for yourself Be in charge, it is the power of youth participation and its ability to make an impact. At V-Day, we hold seen these young women rise for fairness and now look frequent to seeing them start up a lawlessness to end violence in our delicacy.

In my pass through fittingly far I hold pioneer in my opinion in places and situations that take me to declaration stand up and stagger, "How did I get here? Do I in a row belong?" It's an critical reality that as a brown woman from a disenfranchised community, these are questions that are unvaryingly raised. I teacher however take action radio that my tarn mischievous spirit on the air made a difference, bringing a participation and a perspective that the deactivate may hold never heard facing. My experiences at Generally Feel sorry for yourself are ones that retract me not only do I belong, but far away like activists all over the world careworn to be heard, I am obligatory to the conversation.

Third Tuesday Interview Get To Know Jacqueline Diamond

Third Tuesday Interview Get To Know Jacqueline Diamond
HOW MANY BOOKS DO YOU WRITE IN A YEAR?I usually write three books for Harlequin American Romance. Its taking me longer than it used toI once wrote four books a year--because I do a lot of research. My Safe Harbor Medical miniseries deals with fertility treatments, multiple pregnancies and even such technical details as installing new high-tech laboratories, so I research heavily. Mostly this is done on-line but occasionally Ill interview someone. For example, I once interviewed an egg donor who is also a nurseand who was very gracious.HOW DO YOU KEEP COMING UP WITH FRESH CHARACTERS AND STORIES?The key is digging deeply into each persons background, personal issues, quirks and goals. I aim to make each person distinct, with unexpected reactions to events and to love.WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO READ?Of course I read romance, including Regencies. In fact, I started out writing traditional Regencies, one of which, A Ladys Point of View, was published by Harlequin. I also enjoy humorous mysteries, of which Ive written a couple among my more than 95 published books, and occasionally I delve into fantasy and science fiction, both as a reader and a writer. Nonfiction history interests me, too. I keep coming back to the era of the Tudors, not only the best-known figures but also some lesser-known women like Mary Boleyn (sister of Anne) and Mad Queen Juana of Spain (sister of Katherine of Aragon). What's your favorite place to read?Either on the couch in my office or at the kitchen table, where the light is really good. Reading in bed puts me to sleep. What are some of your reading pet peeves?Thank you for asking! I hate when an author manipulates characters to suit the plot, having them do stupid things that no sensible person would do. Yes, sometimes we need for our characters behave unwisely, but their reasons should make sense to them and spring from their personality. Another pet peeve is predictable scenes and dialogue, where you know exactly whats going to happen and how everyones going to react. Thats just boring! I like to throw in a curve ball wherever possible.Do your characters stick with you after you've finished a book and if so, how do you handle it?Because Safe Harbor Medical is an ongoing series (The Surprise Holiday Dad is number twelve), I get to develop my characters as the books, and years, go by. Although each book stands by itself, some former heroes and heroines will pop up in each book. So do their children. Babies grow into toddlers and toddlers into school-age children. Sometimes they wont be part of a book or two, then will reappear as it suits the storyline. Its fun for me and I work hard to keep my timelines straight.HOW DO YOU HANDLE WRITER'S BLOCK?I go back to the beginning of the book and read through it to see whats wrong. If Im stuck, I took a wrong turn somewherefor instance, perhaps I resolved a conflict too easily or didnt build in a strong enough background for my hero or heroine.IF YOU COULD BE A DESSERT, WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?Vanilla ice cream with caramel topping. Simple but perfect. What motivates you to write your books? This may sound weird, but I feel as if my characters actually exist somewhere, and if I dont write about them, theyll never have a chance to live.WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?Honestly, Ive wanted to be a writer since I was four years old. When my six-year-old brother came home from school, I made him teach me what hed learned that day, which is how I started reading. Luckily, my parents never told me you cant make a living as a writer, and somehow Ive always earned a living as a writerin public relations, for newspapers and The Associated Press in Los Angeles, and, of course, as a novelist.Available Books: Attached Thumbnails

My Grandmothers Diary

My Grandmothers Diary
I was going through some files right after the New Year and came across a few pages I had scanned from my Grandmother's diary. It included the exact same month and day as the day I was reading it, January 2. And it was exactly 100 years earlier, 1912. My Grandmother was born in July 1894. This diary entry was written when she was 17 years old and living in South Dakota.

My Grandmother Almas Diary from 1912

My Grandmother on Her Wedding Day in 1914

I dug out the actual diary from the safe where I keep important documents. I paged through it and saw an entry for every day of the year, and the year neatly fitting into the single Composition Book. Some entries are very brief "Worked in the field all day. August 19" and others are almost full pages with details of happy journeys by wagon, auto, or train. Most are matter of fact entries, some express excitement and joy, and a few offer hints of frustration such as the repeated times she needed to chase the old horses out of the neighbors flax field. My grandmother's diary provides a glimpse into the routines (washing, sewing, churning butter, milking cows, and cooking) as well as the comings, the goings, and social network of the community. And here 100 years later I can read from this hardcover Composition Book filled with the handwritings of my grandmother.

I am also reading the reminiscences of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Eighty Years and More (1815-1897). Elizabeth along with her long time friend Susan B. Anthony spent their lives fighting for women's suffrage. I find Elizabeth's writings as mesmerizing as my grandmother's diary. Elizabeth had discipline similar to my grandmother to record her life in a way others could benefit from. They each provide a glimpse into history and life growing up as a woman in the United States in the 1800's and early 1900's.

When my grandmother turned 18 in 1912, she could not vote. In the back of one of her diaries I found a newspaper clipping. It was entitled Women's Rights and it contains the verses of a song

"Sew, sew, sew, my patient sisters, good times are coming by and by; I've good news for you my dear, Women's rights will soon be here, and the men will mind the kitchen by and by."

The song also contains a verse to be sung by the boys:

"Sow, sow, sow, my patient brothers, good times are coming by and by, I've good news for you, my men, Women's rights will come and then pretty girls will do the farming - let them try.

In 1920, eight years after my Grandmother turned 18, the 19th amendment was passed and gave women the right to vote in the United States.

Today, we use email, Facebook, Twitter and other on-line methods to document our lives and stay connected. We post links rather than save newspaper clippings. Some things are the same across the generations, and inevitably other things evolve. I wonder in 100 years what will remain of the Internet diaries of lives today? What will be the connection across the generations? In 100 years, will the Twitter archives of Grandpa be nostalgic reading? Will the Facebook postings of Grandma about get-togethers with friends, pictures of the kids and pets, and funny cat videos serve as insight in the routines of daily life?

I'm not so sure it will be as easy as picking up a diary and reading the handwriting but then maybe there will be an app for that.

Winning Interviews Craft The Perfect Story

Winning Interviews Craft The Perfect Story
You've got your grades, you've got your scholarships and you look clean on paper. But one way or another, easily conveyance out lots and lots of resumes doesn't positive to be getting you the nationality you need.

I've sooner than talked about the prominence of networking in a before competence, and yes, networking is crucial to bringing your resume up to the top. The only way to stand out from the ring is if company refers you, or you're able to detect a position to a name.

But now you've got an cross-examination the subsequently day, how can you ace it?

It is no question that you will need to hold back the straightforward highbrow skills to back you up, and that comes with the type of degree you are graduating with and any substitute sort of ancillary experiences you may hold back. But substitute than that, you need to hold back the clean story to tell.

Barter about why this fresh job is a clean fit for your interests and skill sets. Barter about what you love to do, and how break your leg stay Christmas didn't daunt you from skiing. Did the employer graduate from the especially seminary as you? Great! Convey it up, talk about the immoral shot team!

Like story may possibly Sue tell from her rugby experience?

At the end of the day, getting hired or hiring a celebrity is fairly remote like dating. It is a work out back, but it is overly about feeling a celebrity you can get a long with. It's great to be smart and highbrow and all that, but appendage a human and emotional group to your application makes you a senior well person who everyone can work with for long hours done the day!

Astridestella Philosophy The Reward Is In The Giving

Astridestella Philosophy The Reward Is In The Giving
The story from the Daily Mail doesn't surprise me in the least, something I discovered for myself many years ago and more so because I worked in the caring professions. I have written much on this over the years and its something I teach in Spirit Philosophy and something many discovered centuries ago from when that proverb was written "It is better to give than to receive", here this study details scientific evidence to prove this. But there's more to it than science looking at this holistically i.e. mind, body and the most important aspect of ourselves 'spirit' following spiritual principals 'retribution and compensation for all souls. This is the basis for one of the most fundamental laws of the Universe, the one of "Cause and effect". What you do today ultimately affects tomorrow, like the ripples from a stone thrown into a pool of water, these effects of the ripples are wide reaching and you never know how far those ripples will travel and what effect they will have on the surroundings. When we do a kindness, the recipient more often than not will feel touched that you helped them and want to repay you or pass on the kindness. Of course there will be some who will take your kindness for granted and I like to think those that do are few and far between and we should not dislike those but instead pity them for they are younger souls who have not yet discovered what you give out you get back. All we can do is hope by showing example something will resonate within their psyche and trigger something, where they will see how the Universe works.

As I have said many, many times: "THE REWARD IS IN THE GIVING"

PLEASURES TOKEN WAS IN THE GIVING

Betrayal of trust comes in many forms

Like the love from a parent that flounders and fails

Or from family members those whom once trust

From the dearest friends you thought once had

From whom you thought were there in times of sad

When you gave your all and then some more

Yet happy you were to give to those whom you adore

For that is love and all its gifts

Pleasures token was in the giving but now there's rifts

And how it came to pass, to be this way

You know not how you thought they'd always stay

And yet you love so unconditionally

For that is how you chose to live

Having so much love inside to share, to give

For that is me and how I am I cannot change

And for some people that may sound so strange

For me the pleasures of the living

Is opening my heart and purely giving

MPB (C) FROM 'DEAR J~POETRY FROM THE SOUL'

FORGET CHOCOLATE, SEX AND MONEY... CARING FOR OTHERS CAN BRING JUST AS MUCH PLEASURE AND BENEFIT YOUR HEALTH

* Support-giving triggers reward-related regions of the brain
* Helping others can boost happiness and reduce stress

Caring for friends and family benefits the giver, not just the receiver, scientists say.

Confirming the proverb 'it is better to give than to receive' researchers at the University of California say that lending support to others is a pleasurable experience which can boost happiness and lower stress.

During trials they discovered that when patients were able to help loved ones they experienced positive emotions commonly associated with chocolate, sex and money.

Researchers at the University of California say that lending support to others is a pleasurable experience which can boost happiness and lower stressLead researcher, Naomi Eisenberger said: 'When people talk about the ways in which social support is good for our health, they typically assume that the benefits of social support come from the support we receive from others.

'But it now seems likely that some of the health benefits of social support actually come from the support we provide to others.'

During the study 20 young heterosexual couples in healthy relationships were observed.

Each of the men were subjected to painful electric shocks while their girlfriends underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) brain scans which measured changes in blood flow related to neural activity in the brain.

At times, the women could provide support by holding the arm of their boyfriends, but on other occasions they were forced to watch as their partners received shocks.

Findings revealed that when women were able to help their boyfriends reward-related regions of the brain were activated, including the ventral striatum and septal area.

Under conditions in which no support was provided, these regions showed decreased activity.

Eisenberger said: 'One of these regions, the ventral striatum, is typically active in response to simple rewards like chocolate, sex and money.'

'The fact that support-giving also activates this region suggests that support-giving may be processed by the brain as a very basic type of rewarding experience.'

Findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine also suggest that offering support to others can help reduce stress.

Scientists noted an interesting pattern of neural activity in the septal area, which in addition to being a pleasure center, plays a role in stress-reduction by inhibiting regions of the brain that process threats.

Eisenberger said: 'This finding suggests that support-giving may have stress-reducing effects for the person who provides the support.'

She also noted that support-giving could be a basic human instinct, aiding the 'survival of our species.'

Eisenberger is now conducting further research on how giving to others may reduce our stress responses and ultimately contribute to better health.

MR TAN JEE SAY AND DR TAN CHENG BOCK

While running for President, both managed to find words to annoy half the electorate.

"I would like to go back to the days when women can afford to be housewives," Mr Tan Jee Say said, when asked about his views on the Baby Bonus.

When asked how to encourage female participation in politics, Dr Tan Cheng Bock replied: "The political arena is a difficult area for women in Singapore because the commitment is really very heavy. So you got to get the permission of your husband."

DATE WITH DAD

It is laudable that this campaign by Focus On The Family Singapore believes that fathers are crucial to helping their daughters build self-worth.

But it is problematic when it encourages dads to "affirm" their daughters' "femininity" - surely each daughter has her own unique traits worth affirming besides the fact that she is female?

Also unsettling - the event encourages fathers to give their daughters a purity ring, available for sale on their website, to "signify your commitment to protecting her purity until her wedding day".

BRIDE OF THE WORLD

Contestants for this pageant, which is co-organised by the People's Association, model white bridal gowns, because "white is the universal colour of purity" and "where East meets West, a woman wears a resplendent white gown to proclaim her worthiness as a bride".

The pageant represents marriage as a form of national service.

"In Singapore, our women play an integral role in contributing to our society's well-being at home, at work and in various communities. They help establish and maintain wholesome family values, and together with our National Service men, they provide our nation's Total Defence."

SHAPE RUN 2012

This women's run introduced male pacers for the first time. Why no female pacers? According to Shape's press release and media reports, the male pacers were meant to be "eye candy" - they must "ooze oodles of charm", in order that the women have "a chanceto chase guys for a change". Heaven forbid the female runners are there to, you know, run, and not pant after eye candy.
